The ruling Peoples Democratic Party has won in all the 16 Local Government Areas in Ekiti state.
The PDP trounced all the contending
parties including its main opposition; the All Progressives Congress.
Incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan is the candidate of the PDP while
APC’s standard-bearer is Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd).
The state Resident Electoral
Commissioner, Mr. Sam Olumekun, endorsed the results on Sunday morning
after the collation officers in each of the council areas presented them
and explained the reason for cancellation in any of polling unit if
there were any.
As early as 8am, some collation officers
and a handful of journalists had arrived at the INEC offices located
along New Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti, to witness the announcement. There was
apprehension on Saturday night as the results were being awaited.
In the full glare of journalists, party
agents, stakeholders including local and international observers, the
collation officers read the results.
The collation officer in Ikere-Ekiti said
there was no incident to report in the council area during the
elections. He added that the reported violence in Ward 6 Unit 2 did not
affect the elections held there.
Also, the collation officer for Moba
council area said seven polling units were cancelled out of the nine in
the council when hoodlums disrupted voting with dangerous weapons.
In Ekiti East, the collation officer told
the audience that two polling units; 2 and 6 in Obadore were cancelled
for over-voting.
Besides, another scenario played out in
Wards 1 and 2 in Gbonyin where five polling units were vandalised in
Aiyesogba when, according to the collation officer, hoodlums stopped
voting mid-way.
