Justice has now prevailed for Arizona, USA, mother, Debra Jean Milke, who was wrongly sentenced to death for the murder of her 4-year-old son, after she was freed after spending 23 years in prison.
Milke was convicted in the 1989 shooting death of her son for an insurance payout, when a judge, while reviewing her case, said there was no direct evidence linking her to her son’s death other than a purported confession to a detective.

An appeals court had overturned Milke’s conviction in 2013, ruling that prosecutors failed to disclose a detective’s history of misconduct.
Her conviction was based entirely on a confession Milke gave to the now-discredited detective. Multiple court rulings in other cases said the now-retired officer either lied under oath or violated suspects’ rights during interrogations.
The Arizona Supreme Court’s decision moved the case against Debra Jean Milke one step closer to being permanently dismissed.
